Our Heritage

Founded on Faith

On March 29, 1882, Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut. At a time when Catholic immigrants faced widespread discrimination, he created an organization to provide financial aid and social support to Catholic families.

From those humble beginnings in a parish basement, the Knights grew into a worldwide order of over two million members — the world's largest Catholic fraternal organization.

Council 947 has carried that same spirit of charity and brotherhood in Painesville, Ohio for over a century, living out Fr. McGivney's vision every day.
